Brown Sugar Vanilla Ice Cream--SMS

A truly sweet Sunday for Sweet Melissa Sunday. Thanks to Karen of Karen's Cookies, Cakes, & More we have this very tasty ice cream recipe.

Honestly, when I first saw the ingredient list for Brown Sugar Vanilla Ice Cream, I thought about skipping this one. Although it sounded delicious, and I'm a sucker for ice cream, I would have to purchase some non-fat, dry milk to complete it. And around here, the smallest amount I could find of non-fat dry milk was a giant box with 24 envelopes that could each make 1 quart of milk. And, here's the kicker, it cost $8.99! I only needed a 1/4 of the stuff for the ice cream. But I laid down the cash and I know have PLENTY of non-fat dry milk in the pantry for this ice cream in the future.

This week, we also had the option of making the Hot Fudge or Butterscotch sauce from the Sweet Melissa book. After all...what's ice cream with out some kind of sauce on top, right?? Well, although I made both, I only have photos of the hot fudge. I liked the Butterscotch, but the consistency was a little thinner than I was hoping for and it was very sweet. I usually don't mind sweet, but it was almost too sweet for me.

The hot fudge was super rich and extremely decadent. I was surprised to see that there is no heavy cream in it at all. Just lots and lots of chocolate. Good stuff!

Thanks, Karen for a perfect summer recipe! If you would like the recipe, please visit Karen's Blog.

Thanks for making ice cream with me this week! This was ahit at my house too.

Now we both have enough dry skim powder to make this ice cream for a very long time!

I totally admire that you made both sauces! It's interesting that the hot fudge was so rich, even without the cream.

I love how thick and gooey the hot fudge sauce looks! I didn't even notice there wasn't any heavy cream in it. Kudos for making both sauces

Your ice cream looks creamy. I skipped the fudge sauce but your picture makes me wish I didn't (I made ice cream sandwiches and had "no use" for the sauce). Will have to make the sauce next time I make the ice cream.

Your ice cream looks so good!! Way to go on making both sauces! I wish I'd had a chance to make the sauces but it just didn't happen. The hot fudge looks amazing - I'll definitely have to give it a shot!

I must have been lucky - because I can buy the little boxes of milk powder here. I use it for another recipe, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.....

Great ice cream, and I almost made the butterscotch too, but thanks for the heads up about the sweetness. It would probably be too much for me too.

It looks extra yummy with the hot fudge sauce! How annoying that you could only buy powdered milk in bulk; I'm sure it takes a long time for it go bad, though.

I love hot fudge, and it looks to die for on that ice cream! Brown sugar ice cream sounds yummy, but when you put hot fudge on it, just tell me where the line starts!

I'm going to add this flavor to my ice cream to-do list! And I understand about the ingredients problem...I'm glad you decided to make the investment in a lifetime supply of powdered milk!

You can always use the powder milk for other recipes as a sub for milk and I bet if you made hot coco with it in the winter no one would know the difference since some packets say add water to the coco mix.

It looks delicious and I have never heard of brown sugar vanilla ice cream. My husband is the ice cream person here and he enjoys making it so I will pass this on to him!

Yum! I just might whip this ice cream up today. I saw way too much of it on blogs in the last few days and it got lots of great reviews. I'm intrigued by the brown sugar and I already have dry milk in storage.

That ice cream looks and sounds so creamy and delicious, and good for you to make both sauces. Butterscotch is often too sweet for me.

Well happy birthday! This ice cream looks superb and I wish I could have some now!!! I made a hot fudge sauce using evaporated milk and cocoa powder to make it low fat, and it was delicious! Insanely rich, but delicious!

This looks delicious!

You could use some of the powder for hot chocolate mix come winter!

Ooh, I think I may have found my ice cream flavor for this weekend. Fortunately I already have some dry milk powder in my pantry (I can buy it in bulk, and have some bread recipes that call for it). Your ice cream looks fantastic!

This ice cream was fantastic, wasn't it. I made it a bit late but afterwards didn't mind buying all the extra milk powder because this ice cream ROCKED!
